The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with developmental disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Team member requirements: Must be able to follow directions from a coach and already be comfortable in the water. If they are not comfortable in the water yet, we encourage parents to enroll them in YMCA swim lessons to better prepare themselves for the team. Must be a Special Olympics registered athlete with a physical on file.
Swimmers will be taught to walk, jog, and swim certain distances of the pool using the 4 competitive strokes. Practices will focus on developing swimmer’s endurance, technique, and competitive swimming skills. Volunteers needed during practice times!
